The Gains of The Super Bowl to Arizona

Arizona was a buzz of activity and energy when the 2023 Super Bowl descended on Glendale, with 60,000 cheering fans filling its stadium. From booking hotels to securing reservations at local restaurants, everyone seemed extraordinarily excited about the event. This year’s game will undoubtedly go down as one of the best celebrations ever seen in the state.

The Phoenix played home to its fourth Super Bowl in less than three decades. It’s important to note that the last two Super Bowls in the desert have been instant classics, with the New York Giants shocking the 18-0 New England Patriots on a last-second touchdown in 2008 and those same Patriots scoring 14 fourth-quarter points and making an iconic goal line stood to outlast the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. However, the host city ultimately had no control over what happened on the field.

The Main Event

The Super Bowl, the week’s main event, took place on Sunday, 13 Feb 2023, making this the most significant week in US sports history. Many people were unaware that Sunday would also be “game day” for the State of Arizona as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles prepared for their upcoming matchup.

Hundreds of thousands of people traveled to the Phoenix-Glendale area for the Super Bowl and related events over the weekend, with almost 112 million spectators watching the biggest NFL game of the year on Sunday night.

Effect on Economy

While spectators worldwide yelled during the game on February 12, civic and business leaders pulled a different cause and a billion different causes.

The Super Bowl and associated festivities had a gross economic impact of $719.4 million on the area eight years prior. The Waste Management Open (Feb. 6–12), Car Week (Jan. 21–29), and this year’s big game are anticipated to help the Valley break the $1 billion threshold. Anthony Evans predicted that the money would end up in the pockets of retailers, business owners, organizations, and city and state treasuries.

A recent study from the Common Sense Institute revealed that in 2015, almost $720 million was brought into our state by this event alone. What’s even more impressive is its cumulative effect; it makes up part of an estimated total economic contribution to Arizona’s Gross Domestic Product worth over $24 billion and supports close to 350,000 jobs either directly or indirectly.
